I traveled in the Xinjiang ‘Autonomous’ Region in 1996. It is a special area that oozes history. The 1000 year old city of Kashgar is one of its treasures. Now it faces the wrecking ball of the Chinese government motivated by paranoia, racism, and greed.

I agree. I feel sad that we’re living in a time when so much culture is getting trashed all over the place, and there’s really nothing we can do about it.

It is undoubtedly a horrid decision. If the houses haven’t fallen in 500 years while schoolhouses from just twenty years ago are killing students in other cities, you’d think they’d be wiser putting the money elsewhere.
